An active solar energy system is a system that uses solar devices which are thermally isolated from living space or any other area where the energy is used to provide for the collection storage or distribution of solar energy. Thanks to the photovoltaic effect photovoltaic panels can generate electricity that will later go through transformers and other external elements. Active solar energy systems use the same principles as passive systems except that they use a fluid such as water to absorb the heat. Active solar heating systems use solar energy to heat a fluid either liquid or air and then transfer the solar heat directly to the interior space or to a storage system for later use.

The most common example of course is the thousands of rooftop solar panels in neighborhoods across the country taking sunlight and processing it into electricity. They offer a return well above the long term average return from both the share market and also property investment. Active solar on the other hand is any technology that processes that sunlight or its properties ie its heat into something else. In 2020 they also remain subsidized by the 26 federal tax credit and the net metering law making them an excellent investment.

If the solar system cannot provide adequate space heating an auxiliary or back up system provides the additional heat.
