The icc a117 1 standard for accessible and usable buildings and facilities which is referenced by the international building code requires an 18 min. The ada standards do not require this grab bar but allow a second grab bar to be within the 12 clearance above the horizontal grab bar 609 3 if there is a separation of 1 min. Side wall the side wall grab bar shall be 42 inches 1065 mm long minimum located 12 inches 305 mm maximum from the rear wall and extending 54 inches 1370 mm minimum from the rear wall. The function of grab bars is to give the restroom user additional support when getting onto and off of a toilet. A grab bar at least 36 inches 965 mm long shall be located behind the water closet with one end no farther than 6 inches 150 mm from the inside corner of the stall. Another grab bar shall be mounted adjacent to the water closet on the side wall and extend from no more than 12 inches 305 mm from the back wall to at least 52 inches 1320 mm from the back wall.

The ada standards require horizontal grab bars on the rear wall and side wall of the water closet but it does not specify a vertical grab bar.
